Why Stay Curious?
I didn't really think about how I came up with the name, until I realized how much I did!
The other day in between squats while holding a 15lb kettlebell, my “kick-ass” trainer asked me, “Why ‘Stay Curious’ for the name of your blog?” I took several seconds to respond, mostly because I was out of breath but also because I hadn’t been asked that. My trainer is the best, she pushes me just enough, makes me laugh, and keeps me accountable to my workout goals. Who knew she’d also be challenging me mentally?
I finally replied with something like, “I chose Stay Curious because so many people stop being curious when life gets complicated, mundane or stressful” in between reps. Before we continued with my workout, she explained that our brains fill with energy when we’re asking questions and being curious. She then took me to the mat to do push ups (ugh!) but I couldn’t quit thinking about her question over the next several days.
I've always been curious and sometimes have even been accused of asking too many questions by some friends. It may come from my background of being an auditor or from having a mom who was genuinely interested in others’ stories or just because that’s who I am!
When I decided I needed to step up my social media profile and create an author website, my daughter, who at the ripe old age of 33, has had a plethora of careers, offered to help me. She’s created several websites, a farm business, and is well versed in strategic planning. At our first Zoom meeting (she lives in the Pacific Northwest) I charged in with ideas for my first author Instagram post that I wanted to post that week. She slowed me down. Way down! We ended up spending the next several weeks talking through my goals. Why did I want the website? What was the purpose for my posts? Who was my target audience? I admit, and she can attest, at first I was very impatient. And talk about being curious—it was challenging, but this time I had to be curious about myself!
With her coaching, I was eventually able to identify the values, vision, purpose, position, and mission for Melora Fern. And from there, we worked on my branding, choosing colors, fonts, etc. It took time and much patience (mostly from my daughter!). And I kept learning, about technology, about branding, about myself. I was full of energy and excitement! I learned how to create posts in Canva. (It’s an awesome tool for novices, I highly recommend it). Together we evolved Melora Fern’s brand into something that I’m proud of and that will hopefully interest others.
Through our discussions and much thought, I’ve made this my mission: Melora Fern helps people accept changes in their life with curiosity, integrity and compassion by creating a safe space and community that allows people to embrace and share their past and live a more confident future.
I guess it turns out I’m launching Melora Fern along with my debut novel! I’m hoping others will flourish from my curiosity and will join me on this journey we call life! I firmly believe we can all benefit from learning new things, asking questions, and staying curious.
So, why “Stay Curious” for my blog name? Because I strive to approach every day full of curiosity and I challenge you to do the same!

My wife did extensive training quite a few years ago about.... leadership? conflict resolution? I don't really remember the exact focus, but it did reframe how both of us try to approach things. One of the main tenets was to BE CURIOUS! In the context of the training, that meant rather than leaping to (possibly false) conclusions when someone is irritating or infuriating you, try to take it back down a few rungs, and maybe ask some questions out of genuine curiosity to see what they mean, facilitating good communication. I love the Stay Curious title! And the font too. :-)
